He says that the most common mental heath issues that students face are social anxiety, anxiety, depression, stress, and substance abuse. For students who might be apprehensive about visiting the Psychological Services Center, Wong says there is no need to worry. <image:title>Featured Articles - Have You Heard These Union County Ghost Stories? - Our next story takes place right here on campus! The Bantam Gazette collected stories from faculty and staff about encounters with the spirit that reportedly haunts the USCU Main Building, sometimes called Ethel, who had been known to play the piano in the auditorium. According to USCU History professor Dr. Allan Charles, legend has it that a woman committed suicide either in the building or in the nearby Fair Forest Hotel sometime in the early days of the school.</image:title>

<image:title>Featured Articles - USCU Steps Into Union County Art Scene - Kendall II</image:title>
<image:caption>By Prof. Ashley Ranbanal “I am excited about the vibrant arts community in Union County and in the surrounding areas, as well as the great work that is being done through the Union County Arts Council to support local arts. Every year, the Union County Arts Council hosts a Juried Exhibition featuring the work of nearby artists. My painting, entitled Kendell II, was included in this year’s Juried Exhibition at the Union County Arts Council. The work uses color, shape, and peculiar cropping of objects as a means of compressing deep space, establishing visual energy and tension, and creating the potential for a greater narrative beyond what is immediately seen.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Featured Articles - USCU Steps Into Union County Art Scene</image:title>
<image:caption>The Essence of Being By Diajah Moore “My piece titled The Essence of Being features drawing and shading with pencil and color layered in. This was an assignment for my art class at Union County High School. The teacher told us to do a self-portrait but incorporate parts of our personality. I love music, so I added music playing on the side. The horn on my head shows my love of makeup and cosplay. The open ribcage is meant to symbolize how I’m a hopeless romantic. Where the jaw is out, the teeth are actually books, which represents my love for reading, and the eyebrow is a paintbrush to show that I am an artist. I chose this piece for the Juried Art Show because it felt like the most original piece that I have done. It doesn’t reflect my current skill level, but I wanted to take the opportunity to enter it into the show. I was surprised to be the youngest person entered in the competition, and it was cool to be featured alongside older, more experienced artists. Through participating, I have learned that even if you see someone, like another artist, in an idealistic light, you can still be inspired by them, and they can be just as nervous are you are even though they have more experience. I would encourage any other students who are artists to submit pieces next year.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Featured Articles - If We Can Do It, You Can Do It! - “My name is Holly Patterson, I am 64 years old. I am from Union S.C. and I will be graduating from USC Union this May. I got my degree in nursing 35 years ago. I was a lot younger then. Coming back now is a big challenge. I have a lot of health issues, but I push myself every day. I am hoping to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts with a minor in Religion. Getting a 4-year degree at USC Union has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. Getting to know the younger students has been very rewarding. At first, I felt awkward and overwhelmed being with the young students, but now I am friends with them, and they make me feel young. I think that’s what I have enjoyed most about coming back to school. I love all the activities, especially the food. I am looking forward to two more years at USC Union. “</image:title>

<image:title>Featured Articles - If We Can Do It, You Can Do It! - “My name is Jerry Williams and I am 75 years old. I am from Union. In 2021, I graduated cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies (Political Science/History discipline) from Palmetto College. This was my third time attending college - I had started at Spartanburg Methodist College in 1966 but left to join the Army, and I took a few courses at USC Union in 1981. I decided to come back to school because I was battling lymphoma and went through six chemo treatments, which affected my memory. I wanted to do something to combat that, so I took one class. I enjoyed it and wanted to see how far I could go. It was very rewarding to be able to interact with young people that I would not normally see. I met some really good kids and got to see things from their perspective. The biggest challenge was getting used to working with technology and getting the hang of formatting when writing papers. I liked the small class sizes at USC Union and enjoyed talking with the professors. I also participated in Research Club and completed a project where I collected interviews from Vietnam War veterans. Getting my degree was not related to any career goals, it was all for personal satisfaction. I just wanted to be able to say I did it.”</image:title>

<image:title>Featured Articles - If We Can Do It, You Can Do It! - “My name is Harold Smith, I am 70 years old. I am from Spartanburg S.C. I graduated from Dorman High School in 1972 and attended USC Spartanburg from 1972-1974. It was on my bucket list to go back to school, and my daughter, Dr. Emily Schafer, encouraged me to come here and take classes. I feel that my coursework keeps me mentally sharp. I like being challenged and am appreciative of the opportunity to come back to school. I dig a little deeper into research. I am a curious person. I enjoy being around the young people and their energy. Taking classes here has opened my mind to learn new subjects. I like the fact that if you need a lot of textbooks, most are on a computer. I think being back at college and learning new subjects will make me a more well-rounded person. “</image:title>

<image:title>Featured Articles - Diajah Moore Stuns with Makeup Skills - Now, Moore transforms herself into her favorite characters whenever she wants. She especially loves to create cosplays from the Five Nights at Freddy’s games. She says that the looks are time consuming and require attention to detail. Moore often searches through thrift shops and bin stores to find specific clothing items, and she said that her Halloween costume took two and a half hours for makeup alone. “I am just winging it most of the time,” she said. “I never watch tutorials anymore, unless I am trying to do something specific.” Moore is very proud of her first prize win in the fair, recalling that she was very “surprised” because she found out through a friend who saw her first-place ribbon before she got a chance to go. “It felt good, I worked really hard on the drawing,” she said. “I definitely got out of my comfort zone because I am not used to drawing at that scale.” She eventually hopes to recreate this award-winning drawing as a painting. She has also started to venture into digital art. She is currently taking commissions for artwork; her portfolio of work and links to her contact information and social media can be found at https://celestialbluesoul.carrd.co/. Moore hopes to become a studio artist.</image:title>
